Summer Fest Battle of the Bands - Live from Lufkin
“Live From Lufkin” begins at 11 a.m. on the streets of downtown Lufkin. Bands will perform until 6:30 p.m., and concertgoers can use their smartphones to participate in on-site voting to determine the overall winner. The winning band will perform a victory set at 7 p.m. and receive $1,000. The second-place band will receive $500, and the third-place band will receive $250.
The eight bands competing are:
Dirty Black Lungs (11 a.m.)
This all-acoustic three-piece band from Lufkin performs earnest indie rock with a folk flavor, in the vein of Elliot Smith or Bright Eyes.
The Back 40 Band(Noon)
This six-piece group from the Bald Hill area delivers solid outlaw country with a heavy dose of Southern Rock sound.
Waiting For One (1 p.m.)
This all-acoustic three-piece from the Dallas/Fort Worth area performs originals, mixing classic rock, blues and outlaw country with plenty of vocal harmonies.
Redleter (2 p.m.)
This four-piece group from Palestine plays Christian music, but there’s no chance you’ll confuse their heavy, Metallica-influenced metal sound for grandma’s gospel hymns.
Cherokee Outlaws (3 p.m.)
Four seasoned musicians from Alto perform original songs that borrow elements from Texas Country, Old Country and Southern Rock.
Kindred (4 p.m.)
This Nacogdoches five-piece band plays Christian rock with a polished alternative sound, led by the expressive interplay between the lead guitar and the female lead singer.
Downfall Rising (5 p.m.)
Led by a powerful female vocalist, this modern rock five-piece from Lufkin recently teamed up with a Grammy-winning producer to released their first EP.
Green Light Pistol (6 p.m.)
This alternative/folk six-piece from Burleson features the harmonies of five siblings and delivers authentic roots music with a catchy pop flair.
“I think it’s an array of all kinds of genres of music, everything from Southern Rock to Country and everything in between,” said Tara Watson-Watkins, executive director of the Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Each band will get to play a 30-minute set. I think it’s going to be really entertaining and a great way to showcase not only our local talent, but our area-wide talent.”
After “Live From Lufkin,” Son of a Sailor, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band, will perform as the headline act from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

Ever since he can remember, Larry Pearson has been a Parrothead! That is to say he has been a dedicated fan of the one and only Jimmy Buffett! Johnny was so infatuated with the music and persona of Jimmy Buffett that he became a musician. For years he toured and was told by so many fans how much he sounded and looked like Jimmy buffett! This eventually led to an amazing transformation in Larry's life. Since it was so natural and fulfilling, he started performing only the music of his idol, which fills volumes, and eventually added the authentic costuming and stage props. He then found a dedicated troupe of musicians who also were in awe of the legend! This formed SON OF A SAILOR ... the most incredible re-creation and tribute to the "beach-master" himself....Jimmy Buffett!!
SON OF A SAILOR has played MANY Theaters, Festivals, Corporate and Special Events since that formation and has toured and played consistantly for the past 10 years, due to their tremendous demand!
SON OF A SAILOR takes on the atmosphere of a genuine Buffett concert...right down to the audience participation and enjoyment and energy that goes with it! It will be hard to believe your eyes and ears once the show has started due to the uncanny re-creation by this awesome group of performers!
